Technology Partners - Minesto
Hydrokite Project Development is proud to have established a strategic partnership with Minesto AB, a world class ocean energy technology provider headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, aimed at advancing the frontier of marine energy innovation. This collaboration leverages Hydrokite Project Development's expertise in energy project development with Minesto's cutting-edge technology designed to harness the power of underwater kites. Together, we aim to revolutionise the renewable energy landscape in Australia and New Zealand, by combining our strengths in project development, technology integration, and sustainable energy solutions. The partnership signifies a commitment to driving forward the adoption of clean energy sources and underscores the shared vision of a more sustainable future powered by the vast potential of tidal streams and ocean currents.
Flying kites
Minesto’s Dragon technology operates by harnessing energy from tidal streams and ocean currents, employing a patented principle reminiscent of a kite flying in the wind and the innovative concept of an underwater "flying" power plant. The wing utilizes hydrodynamic lift force generated by underwater currents to move the kite, which is autonomously steered in a figure-of-eight trajectory. This motion pulls a uniquely sized turbine through the water at a flow rate significantly higher than the actual stream speed. The turbine, connected to a generator, produces electricity transmitted to the grid via a power cable in the tether, facilitated by a seabed umbilical to the shore.

Dynamic power generation
The cubic relationship between speed and power production significantly enhances electricity generation, enabling the turbine to produce several times more energy compared to stationary alternatives. By introducing this advanced step in energy conversion, Minesto is actively expanding the global potential for extracting energy from tidal streams and ocean currents, contributing to the advancement of sustainable and efficient marine energy solutions.
Technology proven to deliver reliable, predictable and affordable power
Minesto's technology, in continuous development and ocean testing since 2013, reached a significant milestone in 2020 by successfully delivering electricity to the Faroes Islands' power grid. A subsequent achievement followed in 2022, with the successful commissioning of the first power plant from the Dragon 4 in Vetmannasund, Faroe Islands.
Most recently, Minesto achieved a significant milestone by also successfully completing the Dragon 12 offshore infrastructure installation, ready for power production, in Vestmannasund, Faroe Islands. The Dragon 4 system demonstrated satisfactory electricity production throughout November and December 2023, running parallel to the installation work of the Dragon 12 system.
These achievements underscore Minesto's commitment to advancing and implementing their innovative marine energy solutions and underline the reliability and maturity of Minesto's technology in contributing to the renewable energy landscape.
